SEATTLE -- Landon Donovan pushed himself early in the season so he was ready for the international stage. When he was left off the United States roster for the World Cup, there was an understandable letdown in Donovans performance for the Los Angeles Galaxy. "I really pushed myself to be playing well in April and May this year and I was, and I just dropped off a little bit and its important for me to get back to that," Donovan said. "Again, this is only one night. Its got to continue and thats whats expected of me and thats what I expect of myself." Donovan started finding that form again on Monday night, assisting on two goals and scoring one in Los Angeles impressive 3-0 win over the Seattle Sounders. Donovan assisted on Gyasi Zardes goal in the eighth minute, scored off a rebound 10 minutes later and picked up a second assist on Stefan Ishizakis goal in the 36th minute as the Galaxy won for the fourth time in six matches and just as theyre getting their roster together again. Monday was the first time Omar Gonzalez played for the Galaxy since May 3 and Robbie Rogers returned after missing the last two games. "Were just beginning to get our team on the field," Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said. "Weve gone through a half a season of misery dealing with the injuries and absences. Hopefully we can get a little more of a solidified unit." The Western Conference-leading Sounders suffered one of their worst home MLS losses in franchise history. Seattle lost 4-1 last season at home to Vancouver. The worst home defeat was 4-0 to Los Angeles in 2010 that prompted Sounders management to offer refunds to fans. Seattle had won four of its previous five MLS matches and had a six-game home win streak, but was playing a league game for the first time in more than two weeks. The Sounders were also without MLS All-Star central defender Chad Marshall, who was in a minor auto accident over the weekend and was suffering from back spasms. "It was just one of those days at the office. Better to forget about and move on," Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said. The absence of Marshall was obvious and Seattles defence was disorganized and susceptible to Donovan and the Galaxys attack. Donovan beat the replacement duo of Zach Scott and Jalil Anibaba and left the ball for Zardes to tap in his seventh goal for an early lead. Donovan was then in the right spot to clean up the rebound off Marcelo Sarvas shot in the 18th minute while DeAndre Yedlin was caught watching the ball and lost track of Donovan. Ishizakis goal in the 36th minute drew boos from the sellout crowd and Los Angeles had a number of opportunities to make the final score even more lopsided if not for impressive saves from Frei. Seattle didnt get a clear shot on goal until the 59th minute when Clint Dempseys curling left-footed shot was pushed wide by Jaime Pedeno. Otherwise, Pedeno had a mostly quiet and calm night defending the Los Angeles goal Aside from the rare Monday night matchup, the stadium also suffered a power surge in the opening moments knocking out the stadium lights. There was also a tussle at the end of the first half between Yedlin and Gonzalez that Dempsey joined. The three were teammates for the U.S. at the World Cup. "Its competitive and our team wasnt going to back down," Donovan said. PHILADELPHIA -- Nikolaj Ehlers is a two-sport star who credits his time on the soccer pitch with helping his game on the ice. Ehlers, who played for Denmarks national team until he was 14 before concentrating on hockey, was selected by the Winnipeg Jets with the ninth overall pick in the NHL draft on Friday night. The five-foot-10, 176-pounder was fourth in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with 104 points (49-55) in 63 games with the Halifax Mooseheads this past season. He feels that his soccer skills have helped him develop more speed on the ice, one of the key elements of his game. "I think Im a fast forward," he said. "I think I have a lot of speed I can use on the wing. I like to set up some nice plays and I like to score some goals." Ehlers was the first player from the QMJHL to be selected in the 2014 draft. The 18-year-old took the leagues rookie of the year and offensive rookie of the year honours. Ehlers also had 28 points (11-17) in 16 post-season games for the Mooseheads. "I found myself becoming more of a fan when I watched him play," said Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff. "Any time he got the puck, you felt like something was going to happen. "Hes not the biggest guy when it comes to sizze, but he plays with such good hockey sense that he knows when to take an opportunity to go, and not really put himself in harms way to try to make a play.dddddddddddd" Ehlers speed helps compensate for his relatively slight build. "He doesnt have a lot of weight on him so youre going to want him to continue to grow, but hes a pretty strong player," said Cheveldayoff. "The way he plays the game and the way he moves out there, he has some hidden strength that a lot of players maybe his size dont." Ehlers said he planned to hit the gym over the summer. "Obviously, Ive got to get a little bit bigger and stronger," he said. "I can use my speed to get out of the rough time on the ice, but Im not afraid to get hit or hit somebody." Cheveldayoff said the youngster is a well-rounded individual. "His hockey sense is right up there," he said. "And his characters not far behind. This is a player that every time we had an opportunity to meet with him, we didnt want the interview to end. Hes going to be an exciting player for a long time." Ehlers father, Heinz, was drafted 30 years ago by the New York Rangers (No. 188 overall). He spent his 16-season pro career in Europe. ' ' '
